Film: Sunrise/Sunset

Een gewone dag uit het leven van Zijne Heiligheid de Dalai Lama XIV en een bijzondere ontdekkingsreis voor de documentairemaker Vitali Manski. De film presenteert een intieme ontmoeting met een charismatische filosoof en schotelt ons een verontrustend beeld voor van de toestand van het moderne Eurazië.

De invloedrijke Russische filmmaker Vitali Manski heeft een reeks documentaire portretten gemaakt van beroemde politici als Poetin, Jeltsin en Gorbatsjov. De regisseur moest echter toegeven dat het maken van een film over de Dalai Lama een bijzondere uitdaging vormde, zowel professioneel als persoonlijk. Niet gehinderd door al te veel kennis van het boeddhisme, reisde Manski af naar Dharamsala, de woonplaats van de verbannen leider. Dat werd een ware ontdekkingsreis en de film is dan ook eerder een ‘reisverslag’ dan een ‘portret’.

Manski combineert beeldmateriaal van zijn gesprekken met de Dalai Lama en verslagen van de openbare diens audiënties met taferelen uit het dagelijks leven in Dharamsala. De regisseur is gefascineerd door zijn onderwerp, maar slaagt erin om voldoende afstand te houden, zodat hij niet in dogmatiek vervalt. Uit Manski’s film komt een charismatische filosoof naar voren die de vrede predikt door conventionele waarheden in twijfel te trekken. Manski neemt de uitdaging aan en nodigt ons uit hetzelfde te doen.

Sunrise/Sunset is niet zomaar een verslag van een dag uit het leven van een bijzondere denker die gelooft dat hij 'eindeloos herboren' wordt. Het is een documentair essay over de toestand van Eurazië, en als de trein van de regisseur de grens passeert tussen het overvolle China en de ontvolkte wildernis van oostelijk Rusland, wordt ons een verontrustend beeld voorgeschoteld van de toestand waarin de moderne beschaving zich bevindt.

Sunrise/Sunsetdepicts an ordinary day in the life of His Holiness the 14^th Dalai Lama. The film takes us along for an intimate encounter with a charismatic philosopher and shows us disturbing images of the conditions in modern Eurasia. 

The influential Russian filmmaker Vitali Manski had already made a series of documentary portraits of famous politicians such as Poetin, Jeltsin and Gorbatsjov, but had to admit that making a movie about the Dalai Lama was a very special challenge – professionally as well as personally. Not knowing a lot about Buddhism, he travels to Dharamsala – the residence of the Tibetan leader in exile. He sets out to shoot a documentary but also experiences an insightful inner journey.

In this comprehensive and compassionate document Manski combines excerpts of his conversations with the Dalai Lama and reports of public audiences with images of everyday habits. The director is fascinated by his subject, but succeeds in keeping a professional distance which keeps him from falling victim to dogmatism. The documentary shows a charismatic philosopher who propagates peace by challenging conventional wisdom. Manski rises to the challenge and encourages the audience to join him.

Sunrise/Sunset is not just a report of a day in the life of a remarkable thinker who believes he will be “reborn endlessly”. This documentary essay also depicts the conditions of modern Eurasia. It shows a disturbing image of modern civilization as Manski crosses the border between overpopulated China and the desolate wilderness of eastern Russia.
